The PRESENTATION by  Victor Bonilla-Sosa of Lorna DeSosa’s novel “Infinite Corner” will be in Orly Museum, on Saturday November 13 at 3:00 p.m.  Please RSVP at orlymuseum.org, or 510-384-5606.

Cuba in 1947 is a country of unrest, teeming with mafia-driven crime and on the verge of revolution. Fidel Castro is one of many frustrated young university students, following in the footsteps of Eddy Chibás and preparing to drag the country into upheaval. In the midst of this turbulent background, a dilapidated old mansion sits by the Caribbean, a leftover of the halcyon days of the “Dance of Millions” at the turn of the 19th century. The mansion serves as an unusual backdrop to the struggles between the old Cuban ways and the new ones trying to be born.

DeSosa, a 45-year resident and professor of dramatic arts in Berkeley and of Hungarian heritage, was a famous American theater, radio and television director and producer in Havana, Cuba from 1940 to 1955. Along with Cuban and European emigres she co-founded the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Havana in the 1940s, among the first in Latin America and exclusively represented Spanish playwright Buero Vallejo’s plays in Latin America. The novel, a result of her years of living within Cuban society provides a unique X ray across Havana’s social strata. It is at once an allegory of Cuba’s struggle for independence and a microcosmic tale of human struggles set in 1947 well before the coming storm of the Cuban Revolution. Unlike the novels that have appeared narrating the Castro years, DeSosa employs a poetic and dramatic style to portray a Cuba tourists seldom, if ever, witnessed.

Parking Arrangements: The Museum has one day street parking permits available without charge and has arranged for off street parking at the Museum. Please contact info@orlymuseum.org or call 510 384 5606 to arrange for free parking.

Vadalma Concert

Vadalma Concert-2.jpg

Vadalma creates vibrant, intimate, handcrafted arrangements of Hungarian village folk songs, featuring the rich singing traditions of Transylvania, Moldavia, Transdanubia, and other areas of the Carpathian Basin. Based in San Francisco and Budapest, Vadalma is a wild sprout of the diaspora, reflecting a process of cultural transmission and reimagining heritage in a new setting. Led by singer Zina Bozzay, whose song settings are brought to life by Matthew Szemela's brilliant fiddling and Misha Khalikulov's dynamic cello playing, Vadalma learns the songs directly from culture bearers in the village oral tradition, framing them with instrumental accompaniment that blends traditional, composed, and improvised elements crafted to highlight the songs’ beauty and uniqueness. Their engaging performances reach broad audiences, combining English-language song translations and stories of village life with sublime arrangements, bringing a new face to this beautiful heritage. Vadalma’s innovative approach has been praised as “masterful” “thrilling” “unparalleled” “gorgeous” and “exemplary” by master Hungarian folk musicians.  Their debut album Music of Elderflowers enjoyed CD release concerts in California, New York, Hungary, and Romania, and collaborations include Agócs Gergely, Navratil Andrea, Fábián Éva, Enyedi-Salamon Quartet, Berecz István, Dűvő, and Debreczeni-Kis Helga.  Vadalma means “wild apple”, and also has a double meaning of “wild song today”.

Pesti történetek a kertben- a Pilvaxtól a Broadway-ig / Musical Review in the Garden

Pilvax in Orly Museum.jpg

Musical Review of Hungarian Music from the Operettas of the early 1900's, Dance Songs & Musicals of 1960’s, 1980’s & through the present.

Pilvax Players/Pilvax Productions is an Independent Hungarian-American Theater and Film acting company in New York. It was created by both professional and amateur acting enthusiasts, with an innovative mind-set to bring an infinitely open variety of productions to an international audience and to provide a responsive scene for its members’ artistic growth. This year we have just celebrated our 10th birthday.

A Pilvax Players/Pilvax Productions egy New York-ban (USA) 10 éve létrejött független amerikai-magyar színtársulat. Az egyaránt professzionális és amatôr színjátszókból alakult alkotói csoport célkitűzése, hogy széleskörű, nemzetközi közönséget is megmozgató, akár kísérleti jellegű, innovatív értékű produkciókat is színpadra állítson. Mindezzel nemcsak a kortárs színházi életbe való beilleszkedését, de saját tagjai mûvészeti fejlődését is biztosítja. A klasszikustól a legmodernebb mûvészeti munkák újraértelmezésén keresztül a társulat egy olyan kortárs színjátszó mûhely kíván lenni, amely hatékony mûvészi erôvel képes hidat emelni a közízlés és az avantgárd törekvések közé.

A másfél órás zenés szórakoztató mûsor a magyar színház 100 évének történetéből ad ízelítőt 1920-tól napjainkig. A korai operettek derűjén át egészen a 20-as, 30-as évek budapesti kávéházainak Jazz Age hangulatáig, az 1950-es évek Hacsek és Sajó figurájáig, majd a 60-as évek táncdalainak könnyedsége után a 80-as évek magyar musical sikereinek a bemutatása során eljutunk napjaink legsikeresebb pesti történeteihez.
