Gloria Victis Commemoration at the Orly Museum

The traditional gathering to remember the 1956 Hungarian Revolution at the Gloria Victis Statue at the California State Building in San Francisco has been cancelled since no permit was or will be issued.

 For those who would like to honor the memory of their friends and all others who fought against the Soviet Tanks 64 years ago, there will be a Program in the garden at the Orly Museum of Hungarian Culture, 1720 Arch Street, Berkeley on Sunday afternoon, October 25, 2020.

 You are invited to hear our guest speaker, Dr. Toth Gergely, University Lecturer and Hungarian Emigration Researcher, who will speak in Hungarian. You are also invited to visit the Museum, which is showcasing an exhibit on the 1956 Hungarian National Uprising Against Soviet Domination in English and Hungarian.  The Museum and its garden will open at 2:00 and the Program will start at 2:30.  

 There is no charge to attend the Program or visit the Museum.

Covid compliance declarations require people to wear a mask inside the Museum and outside in the garden. Chairs in the garden will be together for members of the same household and 6 feet apart from others. Seating will be available in the shade from trees or a canape and in the sun, whatever your preference

Gloria Victis Megemlékezés az Orly Múzeumban

A San Francisco-i kaliforniai államépület előtti Gloria Victis szobornál tartott 1956-os magyar forradalom emlékére rendezett hagyományos összejövetelt le kellett mondani engedély hiányában.

Azok számára, akik szeretnék megtisztelni barátaik és mindazok emlékét, akik 64 évvel ezelőtt harcoltak a szovjet elnyomás ellen, vasárnap délután 2020. október 25-én megemlékezésre kerül sor az Orly Múzeum a Magyar Kultúráért kertjében: 1720 Arch Street, Berkeley. 

 Meghívott vendégelőadó Dr. Tóth Gergely egyetemi tanár és magyar emigrációs kutató, aki magyar nyelvenen tartja meg beszédét. A múzeumban egy 1956-os angol és magyar nyelvű kiállítás is megtekinthető. A múzeum és a kert 2: 00-kor nyílik, a program pedig 2: 30-kor kezdődik.

 A megemlékezésen való részvétel és a kiállítás ingyenes!

Fontos! A Covid megfelelőségi nyilatkozata előírja, hogy mindenki maszkot viseljen a Múzeumban és a kertben is.

Outdoor Cimbalom Concert

We are pleased to announce that The Danubius Group (Cimbalom, Violin, Bass, Clarinet and Accordion/Viola) will perform an outdoor concert of Hungarian music on Saturday, October 3, 2020 from 2:00 to 4:00 in the garden.

The Museum and garden will open at 1:00 on October 3.

Tickets for the Concert are $15 for adults, $7 for children age 10 to 17 and no charge for children under 10 years of age. Tickets can be purchased or reservations made by calling or texting Elvira Orly at 510 384 5606 or emailing elviraorly@gmail.com. Cash, checks or credit cards are accepted.

Parking is available at the Pacific School of Religion parking lot (entrance on Scenic Avenue between Virginia Street and Le Conte Avenue) and on the streets near the Museum.

WE ARE REOPENING!

The Orly Museum of Hungarian Culture will be open on Saturday, June 13, 2020 from 2 to 4 pm. Admission and guided tours are free. .

There will be an exhibit on the 100 year anniversary of the Treaty of

Trianon whereby 2/3 of Hungary was given to other countries.

MEET FATHER MAURUS NEMETH FROM THE HUNGARIAN CATHOLIC MISSION

Father Maurus Nemeth from the Hungarian Catholic Mission, Woodside Priory will be at the Museum on March 14 to meet with people.

“Father Maurus was born in 1937 in Hahot, Hungary and fled communist oppression after the ill-fated 1956 Hungarian Revolution. He spent six months in refugee camps in Austria and Holland before emigrating to Canada. In 1963, Father Maurus moved to Portola Valley, California to join the Benedictine Community. After his university studies, Father Maurus started his teaching carrier at Woodside Priory. He has 43 years of academic experience and 49 years experience serving the Hungarian-American community.

Father Maurus’ education includes a Bachelor of Philosophy and Science from Saint John’s University, Collegeville, Minnesota, operated by Saint John’s Benedictine Abbey. He completed his theological studies at Saint Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park, California and earned a Masters degree in Sacred Theology. Father Maurus was ordained in 1972. His awards include “Pro Cultura Christina” from the Hungarian Catholic Bishops Conference in 2007. The Hungarian government in 2009 also recognized Fr. Maurus with the Golden Cross award, for his work with the Hungarian community in the United States.”

The Hungarian Catholic mission was founded in the San Francisco Bay Area in the early 1960s. The mission operates on the beautiful Campus of the Woodside Priory Benedictine Community and School, located in Portola Valley, California. Since 1963, Father Maurus has been an active member of the Benedictine Community. For the last 25 years, Father Maurus has also performed duties as the Pastor of the Hungarian Catholic Mission. Their mission statement is to promote Hungarian values of faith, culture and charity to the approximate 5,000 – 6,000 Hungarians living in the San Francisco Bay Area.

ONE HUNDRED YEAR OLD HUNGARIAN CIMBALOM IN THE ORLY MUSEUM

The Orly Museum of Hungarian Culture will be open this Saturday Feb. 8, 2020 from 2 until 4 o'clock with free admission and free guided tours.

The Museum showcases Hungarian porcelains (Herend, Zsolnay, Fischer and others), Paintings (Benyovszky, Bodó and others), Textiles (Matyó, Kalocsda and others) and Hungarian History.

And also has a Hungarian cimbalom and we expect a musician to be at the museum playing the cimbalom.

MEET REV. VIKTOR MOLNAR

Reverend Viktor Molnar, the new Pastor of the Hungarian Reformed Church 
of San Francisco and Vicinity located in Redwood City, will be at the Museum
on Saturday, January 11, 2020, to meet people in the Hungarian community.
Reverend Molnar recently arrived from Slovakia.

The Orly Museum of Hungarian Culture will be open this Saturday, January
11, 2020 from 2 until 4 o'clock with free admission and free guided
tours.
